Landslide Probability After Cameron Peak Fire

In 2020, the Cameron Peak Fire burned a total of 208,913 acres near Cameron Pass over the span of five months. This wildfire became the largest wildfire in Colorado history and the cause is still being investigated. The boundary of the fire contained approximately 746 structures, 469 of which were impacted by the fire. Those looking to return to the area now face a concern over landslides due to the removal of vegetation.

I am a second semester GIS student enrolled in the GIS program at FRCC and am working towards the bachelors in GIS degree. I work in an unrelated field, but my background is in toxic waste cleanup and other environmental issues. Courses I have taken previously include cartography, database management, and introduction to GIS. My name is Raster Based GIS Student, current student at Front Range Community College. I have taken several other Geographic Information Systems classes, and hope to continue in the GIS program- eventually to at least a bachelor's degree. I have completed about half of the courses required for the AA at this time. Beyond my time at Front Range Community College, I do not have any other GIS experience. Much of my interest in the subject came from my previous general associate's degree, where I initially hoped to enter into the field of archeology. Upon obtaining my associate’s degree in GIS, I hope to find work in the field to fund a bachelors degree. Beyond that, I am currently undecided.

How to Find the Best Stargazing Spots in the United States Using GIS

The purpose of this project was to find the most optimal stargazing spots that are within a 300-mile radius of Fort Collins, Colorado. This topic was inspired by a road trip I went on 4 years ago with my best friend, as we are both astronomy enthusiasts and were searching for the darkest areas to view the most stars at night. I thought instead of choosing where we go based on random internet articles, why not use GIS to solve where we should go?

Watershed Analysis in Kentucky

The purpose of this watershed analysis is to determine how much land surface area drains into a privately owned man-made lake in central Kentucky’s knob region. The lake is situated on a small, startup farm that is interested in irrigated some or all of the 2 acre food plot with runoff that is caught in the lake sustainably while maintaining a healthy aquatic ecosystem. A watershed analysis was performed on the surrounding area through ArcGIS Pro.

I am currently enrolled in my last semester needed to complete the GIS Certificate at Front Range Community College in Colorado. My previous non-educational GIS experience includes mapping rare and invasive plant species and their populations for the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks department. As an avid hiker and backpacker, I utilize GPS and apps that track and monitor location as personal trail mapping projects. Upon completion of the GIS certificate, I am hoping to work with GIS in an environmental field.

Landcover classification of Maui, HI

Mapping and documentation of land features and landcover types is a very important process that many government municipalities do in the United States. However, in some places they face certain challenges such as Intra-Class Variation as well as scale variation. There are of course more but I’m going to be looking at a bigger obstacle, clouds. In this project I will be attempting an image classification of Maui, HI.

Is Jefferson County an Ideal Area for a Solar Farm

There is the old saying “Colorado has 300 days of sunshine”, so why not use that sunshine to produce more renewable energy in Colorado. I would like to determine if Jefferson County would be an ideal area for a solar farm. Currently the state generates 1,357,000,000 (1357 megawatts) watts of energy from renewable sources each year, that is about half the amount of energy the state generates from coal energy sources each year (U.S. Energy Information Administration).
